Where art, science and history converge in the Painted Hall at the UNESCO Heritage Site, the @oldroyalnavalcollege hosts Mars, a 7 metres in diameter rotating replica of our planetary neighbour at a scale of 1:1 million.
The illuminated Mars is created using 120dpi data from NASA allowing us to examine the desert surface of this distant planet.
Following his โMuseum of the Moonโ and โGaiaโ, @lukejerramartist encourages us to reflect on the contrasts between the Earth and its neighbouring desert world.
When you visit the Painted Hall, be sure to read a signboard detailing where Sir James Thornhill (1675-1735)โs Painted Hall ceiling depicts the mythical connection on war with Mars.
In our chosen soundtrack from Gustav Holst: The Planets โMarsโ, the composer wrote it anticipating the outbreak of World War One.
