When I arrived in Budapest this past July, I had the HONOR of experiencing a record-breaking heat wave. Before my trip, my Hungarian esthetician warned me: “Make sure your Airbnb has AC—otherwise, your trip will be less enjoyable.” I should’ve taken her advice as gospel. Spoiler alert: I didn’t.
Our first 24 hours were brutal. In a desperate attempt to survive, we sprinted to the nearest mall and bought one of those sleek, modern bladeless fans. Let me tell you, in moments of extreme crisis, these fans are utterly useless—they’re all aesthetics and no air distribution (BTW). Lesson learned. The next morning, my dad and I decided to delay our outing until the weather was a little more forgiving. We wandered aimlessly, turning left, right, left again, and crossing streets until we stumbled upon a charming, admittedly touristy, square. Seeking refuge under the trees, my eyes were drawn to a building with a statue of a nun or saint perched on the corner.
I generally consider myself non-denominational back in the States, but there’s something about Catholic imagery in Europe that makes me a believer
#amen Snapping a picture of this mysterious saint, I noticed she was facing another statue across the street—another saint. While I was gazing upward, trying to make sense of the scene, my dad interrupted me, brimming with excitement. “Look what I found Pichu!” he exclaimed. I turned to see what had him so enthusiastic, and there it was: an Office Depot. The only Office Depot in Budapest, btw. But this wasn’t just any Office Depot. It was a beacon of hope, stocked with industrial fans. Multiple industrial fans.
I could’ve cried.
Looking back at these photos, I can’t help but laugh. It’s almost as though these saints were guiding us to salvation—in the form of a fan.
I hope this carousel captures the journey, the order of events, and the absurdity of it all (should’ve captured a picture of the fans). The second photo sucks and is mostly for show, but the first one? It’s got soul.
