10 years. 120 months. 3,650 days. That’s how long it’s been since I lost my best friend and one of the greatest dads to ever exist. January 18, 2015, remains the hardest day of my life. At just 12 years old, I faced a loss no child or adult is ever truly prepared for.

Dad, so much has happened since you left, and I’ve wished countless times that you were here to see it all. My 13th birthday was my first without you, and it was incredibly hard, even with family around something, or should I say someone was missing-it was you. Starting middle and high school without you by my side was an adjustment I never wanted to make. On my 16th birthday, I got your truck as my first car, thanks to Gigi keeping it running. I still cherish it and even have your signature from the trucks receipt tattooed on me—it’s one of my favorite reminders of you.

I graduated high school with honors and included photos of us in my graduation slideshow to feel you close that day. Moving to Stephenville for college brought new friends and experiences I know you would have loved. I even joined a sorority, though I can imagine how much you would have teased me about it. After some changes, I found my passion and graduated with a degree that led to a job I truly love.

I miss you every day, and while forgetting the sound of your voice has been heartbreaking, moments like catching a hint of your cologne bring me comfort. Your funeral was overflowing with people whose lives you touched, and your selflessness in donating your organs continues to inspire me.

I often wonder if I’m making you proud, but every time someone tells me you’d be proud, it feels like a message from you. I’m forever grateful for the memories we made and the bond we shared. I’ll carry your love and stories with me always.

I love you more than words can say and miss you every day. Until we meet again.

Love always,
Your Emmie girl💙
