Last Minute Submissions on the Treaty Principles Bill.
Left your submission to the last minute and now you’re feeling overwhelmed?
Start a 15 minute timer e how and let’s go!
Here’s a super easy step by step guide to put together a submission you can be proud of in 15 minutes flat!

1. Open a word document or a new page in your notes app so you can draft your submission without worrying about the website crashing!
2. Go to the submissions portal on the New Zealand parliament website and fill out the form with your contact information.
3. Click whether you want to speak to your submission.

Say yes to oral submission if you can!
You can present via Zoom or in person at Parliament and it’s very straight forward.
If you haven’t had time to prepare as strong a submission as you’d like, you may be able to dive deeper in an oral submission.
Keep in mind that the Select Committee may not invite everyone who ticked “Yes” to make an oral submission. With the high volume of submissions, ticking “Yes” doesn’t guarantee you’ll get the opportunity but it’s worth trying!
4. Introduce yourself briefly - making sure to keep out any private information you don’t want public.

If you’ve got some privilege - leverage it here!
If you are pākehā / tangata Tiriti name this and highlight that you recognise Te Tiriti o Waitangi is what enables you to be here in New Zealand.
If you have a privileged role - such as if you have a prestigious job like being a doctor, lawyer, academic, or business owner; if you’re recognised in your field or community; or if you have other attributes that are rewarded in mainstream society this is the time to put them on display!

Make sure the Select Committee knows that there are so many diverse people opposed to this Bill.
5. Say explicitly that you oppose the Bill and that you recommend it be rejected.
*Optional:
If you have read the Bill then say that you have read and understand it.
If you haven’t read it, skip this part. Don’t worry - you can still submit.
If you do want to read it before submitting it’s only a few pages, but keep in mind that the wording of the Bill is deliberately misleading. Don’t let the nice wording put you off submitting - you can see submissions from the Māori Law society, and letters to the PM from 42 Kings Counsel (lawyers) that explain why it’s misleading.
6. Add any reasoning you have for opposing the Bill - it can be super simple - even one or two sentences.
Points you can “steal” include:
* The Bill is divisive and disruptive to our society
* The Bill is based on misunderstanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the existing principles; and the legal and societal context
* The Bill itself breaches Article 2 of Te Tiriti o Waitangi - as found by the Waitangi Tribunal
* The Bill is a breach of Indigenous Rights
* The Bill effectively one-sidedly reinterprets a Treaty agreement without the consent of the other party.
* The Bill works against its own stated objectives and will result in less social cohesion and clarity on Te Tiriti and the principles
* The Bill proposes principles that have nothing to do with the text of Te Tiriti or of Hobson’s document so are misrepresenting the agreement
* The Bill puts essential human rights up for a referendum. Human rights should never be subject to referenda.
* The Bill’s focus on “equality” is misleading and erases the inequities faced by Māori as a result of colonisation and breaches of Te Tiriti.
* The Bill limits the potential for Māori and other communities to use Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the existing Treaty Principles to protect our rights, and our whenua.
If you would like to support the work of other organisations or individuals who have made submissions, say that you endorse the submission of __________.

This could be helpful if you don’t have time or are struggling to write your own points.

Some orgs who have publicly shared their submissions include:
Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa - The Māori Law Society
ADIR - African Diaspora for Indigenous Rights Aotearoa
ASTR Asians Supporting Tino Rangatiratanga
7. Now make your recommendation.

It should be very clear eg. “I recommend that the Select Committee reject / abandon / stop this Bill.”
8. Conclude in one line - reiterate that you oppose the Bill and sign off with your full name.
9. Copy and paste that sucker into the online form and submit well before 11:59pm!
You can paste most of your submission in the first box and add the recommendation and conclusion into the second box.
Tick the boxes and click through - ensuring you receive the on screen notification AND the email confirming that your submission has been received.
kā mihi nui - thank you for doing your bit to protect Te Tiriti!

Update: FOUR days til you need to be submitting your Treaty Principles Submissions. Submissions have been extended til Tuesday 14th at 1pm.

You can also copy and paste points that resonate with you if you’re unsure what to say - it doesn’t have to be in your own words apologies for earlier slide encouraging this. If copy & paste is what you can manage go for it!
