This morning I had my first and hopefully last treatment for cancer. Last April I noticed a lump in my leg, my doctor initially said that it was likely a benign cyst but to let him know if it started growing or became painful. In the fall/winter of last year it grew and started to become a little painful so I got some imaging done with very suspicious results. In January I got a biopsy at Sloan Kettering in New York and it came back as positive for cancer, specifically an incredibly rare one called Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma. Of course I would find myself getting the cancer that only 80 people per year in the United States get diagnosed with - so on brand. Luckily we caught it very early, no detection of spread which is also rare with this type of cancer. My oncologists believe that based on its size I’m right on the edge between stage 2 and stage 3.
This morning I got it removed in a successful surgery at MSK. Because we caught it early, and the surgeons initial impression of margins are good, we are hoping this will be the only treatment I need to have.
I knocked it out today and if it rears its ugly head again I’m gonna be ready for it.
This year has been a whirlwind so far (for many reason) and I’m still adjusting to the reality of living with cancer. There were definitely some dark times for me during the initial diagnosis phase but right now I’m in the mindset that I’m gonna be totally fine, weirdly probably better than I would have been if I didn’t have cancer. This experience has given me such deep appreciation for my health, my life, and for the love I have found with the people around me. I wouldn’t have gotten through this without the amazing doctors, friends, and family that I have in my corner. I’m gonna beat this thing and live.
