Details of one of the three canvases commissioned for the Strathearn Restaurant, @thegleneagleshotel, in Scotland in 2019. There were 3 canvases in total: one depicting breakfast; one lunch; and one dinner.
The idea was to create a still life painting that referenced the Dutch Old Masters, with an added surreal twist that included a nod to the Caledonian Railway from days of yore, with the table layout doubling as a landscape. The sublime and beautiful paintings of artists such as the 16th Century Belgian artist, Pieter Claesz, were an obvious inspiration.
For the train elements I sourced a Hornby model replica of a Caledonian Railway locomotive and carriages. I then set up the whole tableau in my studio, with fresh produce, track, train and whatever else, which was photographed for further reference for the painting.
This first one was for the breakfast canvas

Love the Hornby engine and carriages appearing to be chugging along a viaduct behind the table…. So witty and fun (as well as superbly accomplished!)
