Ordering dinner in the US can feel like a pop quiz for European tourists 😅🍽️ In the European Union, menu prices have to include tax, so what you see is exactly what you pay. In the US, sales tax changes depending on the state and city, and it usually shows up at the very end of the bill. Then there’s tipping. The federal minimum wage for tipped workers in America is still $2.13 an hour, the same as it was in 1991, which means servers in many states depend on tips for most of their paycheck. Across much of Europe, servers are paid a regular wage, and in places like France, service is legally included in the price on the menu. Even paying works differently. European restaurants typically bring the card machine straight to your table, while plenty of American spots still walk off with your card and return with a receipt to sign.
