Haven’t quite managed to pick them all up in this photo, there were 14 magpies in my apple tree this morning. I don’t even know what that means, the nursery rhyme goes up to 13 and that’s the devil himself 👹 😳. What’s the collective noun for a flock of magpies? Do I need holy water? Or was it just a stand off with the group of jackdaws in the silver birch? Answers on a postcard.

A mischief of magpies! What a great photo. I'm not sure what this means but it reminds me of the Chinese Fusang tree, a mulberry tree home to 10 ravens who carried a sun each. 9 birds would rest whilst the 10th would fly and bring daylight. On one occasion all 10 birds flew together, scorching the Earth (maybe that's what's happening this summer!) - An archer named Houyi then shot 9/10 out of the sky with a single arrow and the remaining raven hid in a cave. Nobody could retrieve the raven and the land remained dark, until the ravens friend called cockerel called him out and continues to do so every morning.
