🌟 This
#BlackHerstoryMonth, we honor Dr. May Chinn (1896–1980), the first African American woman to graduate from Bellevue Hospital Medical College (now the NYU Grossman School of Medicine). Against the backdrop of rampant racial and gender discrimination, Dr. Chinn’s perseverance and brilliance paved the way for future generations of Black women in medicine.
Born in Great Barrington, MA, Dr. Chinn’s journey was shaped by challenges, from growing up in a segregated society to overcoming personal hardships. Yet, her determination never wavered. She entered medical school in 1922 as the only Black woman in her class and went on to become a trailblazer in cancer care, contributing to early cancer diagnosis in Harlem, New York.
Dr. Chinn’s career is marked by a series of groundbreaking accomplishments:
💡 First Black woman intern at Harlem Hospital
💡 Founded the Susan Smith McKinney Steward Medical Society to support Black women in medicine
💡 Worked alongside pioneers like George Papanicolaou, helping to advance cervical cancer detection
💡 Served as a beacon of hope for the underserved, providing care during the Great Depression and fighting for equitable healthcare
Her tireless work and dedication to improving healthcare, especially cancer care, changed the medical landscape for countless individuals, and her legacy continues to inspire.
Today, Dr. Chinn’s example reminds us of the strength, resilience, and impact of Black women in the fight for equality and justice in medicine. 🙌🏿💜
