I had the best day on the best day to be in the best city in the world.

Can’t imagine a more meaningful way to mark my new relationship with running than to serve as run support for former Army Master Sergeant @cedrickingmsg — a purple-hearted double above-the-knee amputee due to stepping on an IED.

A victory for me to just make it to the start, crossing the finish with Cedric was a peak never-will-I-forget life experience.

Rewinding back a year and half, my spine surgeon said I should forget about running. Forget that, I thought. So, I baked up a plan and began plotting my way in.

For the first seven months of my spinal fusion recovery, only slow walking. I began PT on month 8, with light strength training starting a few weeks after that.

Since then, I’ve been in my home gym by the four o’clock hour, every single day aside from a handful of exceptions.

To celebrate 1 year post-op, I ran my first mile, a slow one with @dan_churchill. From there, I patiently pursued a six-month relationship with my treadmill, careful to never push with a first-for-me less-is-best philosophy.

As a consequence of caution, I can’t say I was exactly ready for the NYC marathon, as my run training consisted of two weekly 5-mile run-walks.

Nevertheless, I decided to give it a go. And I’m delighted I did. The spine did fine. And despite my lack of aerobic conditioning, my body held up long enough to cross the finish line.

Striding alongside Cedric is the how. Taking my strength from his kept me connected to my higher power.

The why. While running again was my goal, Cedric confirmed that my purpose is service.

Now 60 and now on the other side of my season of forced repose, I have greater clarity on what matters. Not so much about ego gratification anymore, what wakes me up is more giving of myself to other people.

If you want a big and beautiful life, make it about something much larger than yourself.

Thx @achilles_international for your incredible work. @joechura for recruiting me into this adventure & @cedrickingmsg for your strength, and infectious inspiration.

And thank you NYC. You remain undefeated. You leave me hopeful.

See you next year.

Still 📸 @rgosp

I never imagined that something so small could leave such an enormous hole in my heart.

Baby was never supposed to be my pet. He came into my life unexpectedly, and somehow became one of the greatest loves of my life. For 2.5 years, I had the privilege of loving this strange & wonderful little creature, and being loved by him in return.

I know not everyone will understand the bond I had with an opossum, but he changed me forever.

I’m sharing this because I know I’ve been quiet, and because he deserves to be remembered. I need some time to grieve and figure out how to navigate a world without him in it.

Thank you for your patience and understanding while I take some time for myself.

I love you, Baby. I hope you knew just how much. 🖤

A little BTS.....🎄🐩🎅

Republicans spent months coming at Abdul El-Sayed sideways, and the first Muslim ever elected to the U.S. Senate just told them to come correct!
___________________________________________________
Abdul El-Sayed (D) beat Republican Mike Rogers for Michigan’s open Senate seat, sitting at 52.5% to Rogers’ 45.6% with about 96% of ballots counted, and the AP made the call at 2:27 a.m. making the 42-year-old physician the first Muslim ever elected to the United States Senate, taking over the seat of the retiring Gary Peters.

Months of Trump mocking his name and attacking his faith set up the moment, and El-Sayed cashed in at his Detroit victory rally. “Donald, I know you struggle with my name,” he said, “so after JD swears me in, in January, you can go on and call me Senator.”
