One of the main characteristics of the Milwaukee Art Museum is the spectacular moving roof - a bris-soleil with louvers that open and close like the wings of a great bird.

Santiago Calatrava sought inspiration from nature - the movement and metamorphosis of flowers, animals, and the sea - as a basic element for the concept of the pavilion.

The Quadracci Pavilion, completed in 2001, was Santiago Calatrava’s first project in the U.S. and his first museum design.

Very dramatic (and beautiful), but what does all this advanced technology accomplish (besides drawing attention to itself)?
