After decades of commuting in East Bay traffic, the pedal assembly in my 86 GTI was shot - the assembly itself had cracked and split from 200K+ miles of clutch presses and a clutch cable that was probably never greased in its life. To fix this, I had to take apart the entire lower dash and drop the steering column so that I could maneuver the pedal assembly out of the car. Not too terrible of a job, just super awkward due to the position of everything and the amount of space that’s available under the dash. Taking out the seat really helped!
The new pedal assembly really made a night and day difference on how much fun this car is to drive! The clutch is much more precise and not nearly as heavy, now that the pedal and clutch cable aren’t twisting the entire assembly. IMO fixing stuff like pedals, shifters, steering etc. is always the most satisfying because that’s the stuff you interact with the most while driving. Next up are new injectors and a new power steering reservoir!
