Prisen gives for Masaana Egedes indsats for fri og troværdig journalistik på begge sprog. Med prisen anerkendes Masaana Egedes bidrag til ytringsfriheden og den oplyste debat i Grønland.   Ebbe Muncks Hæderspris blev indstiftet i 1975 for at ære Ebbe Muncks virke som journalist, modstandsmand, diplomat og hofchef.
