My trip to Lebanon was entirely made possible by the fantastic team at @seenary0 whose work I got to be a part of while there. We did amazing workshops with women from Lebanon, Syria and Palestine. The power of theatre to create community and connection was in full force and the work done was so beautiful. The talent of the many women I met was outstanding and the stories shared and performed through their incredible writing was truly inspiring, I felt very lucky to be there. To see the work that @seenary0 does please check out their page and support if you can. It’s so important to provide spaces for people to use trauma for their own healing. I believe all aspects of theatre can do that and what I got to be part of in Lebanon affirmed that belief a thousand times. See their shows if you are in Beirut! All info on their website. Directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, the film is set in 1986 Madras and revolves around a feared gangster who accidentally gets locked inside a school restroom by an eight-year-old boy named Sabari. What begins as an unusual situation slowly develops into a heartwarming bond between the gangster and the little boy, bringing out the softer side of a man feared by everyone. Vijay Sethupathi delivers a memorable performance, while young Sai Prithviraj adds innocence and charm to the story. Lijomol Jose also plays an important role. With beautiful storytelling, nostalgic 1980s visuals and soulful music by Sai Abhyankkar, Baththa reminds us that humanity, love and friendship can change even the hardest of hearts.
