“Keep politics out of my sports.”
•
It’s a phrase we hear all the time, but it oversimplifies the relationship between sports and the world around us.

I recently had the opportunity to interview Abdul El-Sayed, and I wanted to ask him about was his experience as a collegiate athlete.

Specifically, I was interested in his perspective on the intersection of sports and politics, and what he learned from being in a locker room surrounded by teammates from different backgrounds and beliefs.

I understand why people want sports to be an escape from politics, but the reality is that throughout history, sports and politics have been deeply intertwined. From breaking racial barriers to fighting for equality and civil rights, athletes have played a pivotal role in pushing society toward meaningful social change.

Having spent much of my life in locker rooms, I believe there’s something uniquely powerful about bringing people together who might disagree on what’s best for the country, but still have to trust one another and work toward a common goal.

Sports have always been about more than just the game. And sometimes, the impact they have beyond the field is far greater than anything that happens on it.

Here’s a portion of our conversation.

⚠️ HISTORICAL & EDUCATIONAL CONTENT

WHAT IF NAZI GERMANY HAD WON WORLD WAR II?

If Nazi Germany had won World War II, the political map of the world would likely have been radically different. The exact outcome is uncertain, but surviving Nazi documents and wartime policies provide clues about the future envisioned by Hitler and his government.

In Europe, Germany intended to establish a vast sphere of control, particularly across Eastern Europe. Plans such as Generalplan Ost envisioned the expulsion, forced displacement, enslavement, and mass murder of millions of people to make territory available for German colonization.

The Holocaust, already underway during the war, would likely have continued. Nazi racial policies targeted Jews, Roma, people with disabilities, Slavic populations, and other groups. A German victory would have left these populations facing further persecution and mass murder.

Western Europe would likely have remained under German domination or within a German-led political and economic system. Nazi ideology would have continued to shape education, culture, the press, and public institutions through censorship, propaganda, and political repression.

Globally, a German victory would not necessarily have meant lasting peace. Rivalries with Japan, the United States, and other powers could have continued or developed into new conflicts. The balance of power would have depended on the circumstances of Germany’s victory and the surviving strength of its opponents.

Historical conclusion: A Nazi victory would likely have produced a Europe dominated by a racial dictatorship, built upon occupation, forced labor, territorial expansion, and systematic persecution. Beyond these documented intentions, the precise shape of the world that followed remains speculative.
