Thanks Series | #LewisQuarters 155th deed anniversary 4.4.1870 📜 🖊️#MarkerUnveiling | April 5, 2025🪧✨ Swipe to see the impact! 🙏🏻 🙏🏾🙌🏾🙌🏻
After visiting Africatown and assigning Frederick Murphy’s documentary Sweet Home Alabama: A Chief and His Protégé, Jessica Hanson got her former 🐅💙Tennessee State University 🤓 students excited to jump into action. Inspired by the story of Africatown and Lewis Quarters, they quickly mobilized — leading fundraising and awareness efforts rooted in descendant-led history. 🎓
Four of the young women, facilitated by Ms. Hanson, also led a Q&A with descendant Joycelyn Davis after the November 2022 full-house screening of the acclaimed documentary Descendant, directed by Margaret Brown and produced by Barack and Michelle Obama and Questlove, at TSU’s Poag Auditorium. 🎬
Shout-out to top fundraiser Najila Logan, who joined sixth-generation descendant Joycelyn Davis in that discussion, along with Amera Adams, Lyberti Chandler, and Zaria Smiley. 💐
When more support was needed, District 1 Commissioner Merceria Ludgood stepped in — as she always does for the city of Mobile and anything tied to Africatown. As the 155th anniversary of the Lewis Quarters historical marker unveiling approached, her steady presence and care helped bring it to life.👑
Without her — and the support of Sharee Broussard and Dena Pollard — the event would not have been what it was. From tents to chairs to final logistics, they showed up with full hearts. ✨
Though Commissioner Ludgood couldn’t attend in person, she sent an incredible speaker in her stead — the unstoppable Sheila Flanagan, Director and Curator of the Historic Avenue Cultural Center, whose wit and wisdom made the day even more memorable. 🌊🫂💛
