India has taken another step towards strengthening its own satellite navigation system. ISRO successfully launched NVS-03 aboard its GSLV-F18 rocket from Sriharikota at 11:51 pm on October 30. The satellite was subsequently placed into its intended Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit.

The mission’s key feature? An Indian-made atomic clock, carried alongside procured atomic clocks. Such clocks provide the extremely precise timing that satellite navigation systems need to calculate a user’s location.

NVS-03 is the third satellite in ISRO’s next-generation navigation series, designed to maintain and improve services under NavIC — Navigation with Indian Constellation, India’s indigenous alternative to GPS. Its coverage extends across India and approximately 1,500 kilometres beyond the country’s borders.

The satellite also adds the L1 navigation signal alongside existing L5 and S-band signals. The mission marked the 20th flight of India’s GSLV, adding another milestone to the country’s homegrown space programme.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated ISRO’s scientists and engineers, describing the launch as an important step towards strengthening NavIC and advancing self-reliance in critical technologies.
