Here’s a little piece of Mystical-Lore for you guys!
As you may or may not know, “A Clock Without A Craftsman” is a reference to a Dr. Manhattan quote from The Watchmen.
“They claim their labours are to build a heaven, yet their heaven is populated with horrors. Perhaps the world is not made. Perhaps nothing is made. A clock without a craftsman. It’s too late. Always has been, always will be too late.”
A metaphor for humanity and how we fit into this crazy world. Seemed fitting at the time (2019), and continues to be more and more fitting as time goes on.
This photo was taken/sloppily edited by myself and @williammcandelario on August 19th 2020. William flew into Chicago from Puerto Rico (in the middle of ALL that craziness) to rehearse for 5 weeks, work out all of our drum parts, and then track all the drums for an hour and 42 minute double album in just 2 days at @gravitystudios with our bud @dcfaudio
Our typical day was to wake up and have some Cr-egg’s (I make great eggs) with Giardiniera, rehearse parts for 2-3 hours, watch 3-4 episodes of Breaking Bad (I’d never watched the show, so it was blowing my mind), get back to rehearsing for 2-3 hours, play some The Last Of Us Part 2 (it JUST came out), and then close off the night with more Breaking Bad, blasting tunes in the studio (usually drunk), and eventually head out on a walk to a local park to hang.
On THIS particular night, as we were messing around on the basketball court, it came to me. I was standing behind William and just kinda saw the cover. The basketball backboard was this post-humanity dead Earth, and William was Dr. Manhattan (or would later be referenced as “The Watcher” from our song “In His Image”).
I sent this exact image to my long time artist buddy @landon_richmond / @knownotruth as a reference for what we were after. And within 2-3 weeks I received the finished album cover for “A Clock Without A Craftsman”.
Such a genuinely horrible time in all of our lives, but I do have so many great memories of working on this album through all of it.
