At 16, my dad was completely on his own. He took whatever work he could find — starting as a dishwasher, later becoming a farmworker — labor that eventually led to his path to citizenship.

He lived in SF with his cousin, eventually moving to Sonoma. The only people hiring undocumented immigrants were ranch owners. One random day on the radio, they announced green cards for farmworkers under Reagan’s amnesty. Anyone who qualified just needed to show up to an SF office. Yes, it was that simple back then.

He was terrified. He thought it was a setup — a trap to deport him. & many of his cousins/friends shared that same fear and didn’t show up. But my dad did. He took the risk & changed our life forever. Because of his courage, I was born here. I had opportunities he never had.

If this is the “right” or “legal” standard we expect from immigrants today, let’s be honest — that door no longer exists. What helped my dad wasn’t just hard work. It was a rare window of opportunity, open for a moment in history. This is something that weighs heavily on me. I will never turn my back on my community.

No. My parents were born in Hawai’i and I was born there as well. Two generations of Native born Americans.

My grandparents came from Mexico and became citizens. Their children are citizens, we are citizens. No luck was involved. Just followed the law.

If I was from Mexico, I'd come here illegally as well. However, I'd understand the risk. I'm sure they all understand it too.

I have ancestors that go back here to the 1700s, and this young lady is 100% correct. We should NOT be tearing families apart based on who was born in which womb or when they came here. They are even deporting innocent people who are going through the LEGAL process. The truth is that they don’t want any immigrants here, which is wild considering their own European heritage. God will judge this nation on how terrible we’ve treated those who come here, regardless of whatever status we give or deny them.

My father was also granted amnesty by Reagan. He was able to file documentation for my mother and older siblings. I was born a year and a half after my mom moved to the US. I am privileged to say the least to have never live in fear that my family is going to be separated however I am empathetic towards the people who weren't so lucky.
