WIENER TIMES TIMES 2 – KLASSE RIX-UENO, 2025
Many thanks to the MAK, Museum of Applied Arts Vienna, for their permission to reprint a rare booklet from 1957
On the front cover: careful reprint of a rare booklet from 1957. It contains a collection of student works and was produced under the direction of Felice Rix-Ueno at the Kyoto City University of Fine Arts in collaboration with the Research Society for Art Education.
Felice Rix-Ueno, who taught there from 1951 to 1960, brought Vienna and Kyoto together in a distinctive way both personally and through her work. She made a significant contribution to cultural mediation and the development of art education approaches in post-war Japan, not only as a designer but also as a lecturer at the research society.
Her teaching incorporates the methods of her Viennese mentor, the educational reformer Franz Čižek in his course “Ornamental Form Theory,” as well as the formal rigor of Viennese Modernism, which she combines with the sensitivity of Japanese design traditions. In doing so, she created a fertile foundation on which new ways of thinking and seeing things could flourish.
