ASTRID from HTTYD !!
@fanexpodenver If you don’t wanna read a beefy post you can scroll haha
First I wanna thank all the host, judges and fellow cosplayers for being very patient, and kind. This was my first comp and it was very intimidating, but I didn’t meet a single person that was not so beyond nice and helpful!
@thecovinator @undeadtoasty @fadetobats @poppylop_cos A HUGE thank you to
@hareloomcosplay and
@herringbonecosplay for all of the amazing advice, and build book panel. SERIOUSLY some of the nicest people I’ve ever met, and certainly inspired me to keep pushing to get better ❤️🩹
Here are a few things that got me a sustainably award for those that are curious ➡️
My cosplay consists of many repurposed, thrifted, or recycled materials.
My shirt is actually made of an old blanket, curtain, and pair of sweat pants!
My spikes on my skirts are made of paper, stuffed with a tiny bit of clay, and news paper.
I got my boots from my mom actually! She was planning to give them away.
The handle to my axe is an old PVC pipe from my dads job.
My fav part- everything is weathered using a grill and burnt firewood. Mixing the charcoals with a little water actually creates a pastel texture and you can almost draw with it. It was MESSY, but I wanted it to look authentic! I used this on everyone including my armor. I will warn anyone who tries this- your hands and car seat WILL be dirty for a long time, and if you don’t like a greasy feeling this might not be for you ! I didn’t mind it and I felt more in character honesty haha!
So a lot of the cost of material mainly came from the skirt aspect, but honestly if I went through it again, I feel like I could have come up with something like old blankets for that as well, I just had a very specific idea in mind!
I know some people DMed me saying they were gonna go for sustainability next year! Please DOOO it’s SO rewarding and so much fun to talk about. 🫶✨
