it’s been 7 years since the world lost Anthony Bourdain and i am still not over it. ive been thinking a lot lately about what i learned from him and the impact he left on so many
for anyone younger than me who may not be familiar with Tony, he was (and is) a celebrated chef, author, and tv personality who struggled with addiction and depression. but as with anyone fighting that battle, he was so much more than those demons
he was not your typical, clean-cut tv star as he was rough around the edges with his liberal use of profanity and DGAF attitude, often described as “the original rock star” of the culinary world or a “culinary bad boy” making waves with hot takes against other celebrity chefs and overt commercialism of the celebrity cooking industry at the time, and wasn’t shy about his criticism of the restaurant industry as a whole either
he was a disruptor and i think one of the things he will be remembered for was the way he changed food travel tv and his legacy will be how he used that platform to ancourage all of us to be curious about and engage with the human condition whenever & wherever we can
he preached a gospel of connection through food saying he could have a conversation with anyone, especially someone he disagreed with, by asking 2 things…whats for dinner & what makes you happy
when he passed (taking his own life at age 61), his friends
@ericripert &
@chefjoseandres started Anthony Bourdain Day to celebrate him on his birthday, June 25th
so this year, I want to join in celebrating Tony by having a party at Pinch, complete with a few of his favorite things, and raise some money for a good cause
Puritan Coney Island Express food truck will be set up from 4:30-6:30pm as one of his favorite things were cheap, good eats
@mhawvr will be set up to offer a chance to learn about their programs and resources
and lastly…I will be taking cash donations to support
@trevorproject a non-profit focused on suicide prevention for the LGBTQ+ community. I would love to raise $500 and I think we can knock it out of the park
so grab your Ramones tee & come by for some food, some fun & a whole lot of community love 💛💛
