Singing Don José means full-bodied, heart-on-the-sleeve singing — but leaving just enough in reserve for the quietest, most exposed phrases.

This line from La fleur is one of the trickiest: a long climb through the passaggio, landing on a sustained pianissimo B-flat.

It’s a tightrope between raw emotion and control.

Coming to this after a couple of months singing Ferrando — which sits in a totally different vocal place — has been a challenge in itself.

Still working it out.

Really looking forward to my first performance of this dream role at Les Nuits de Fourvière this week!
