Long before the building became a public library, it was home to one of Chicago’s most unusual and talked about drinking spots. Known as the Midget Club, the tavern attracted plenty of attention and became a popular destination for people looking for something different from the city’s traditional nightlife. Now, rare footage offers a fascinating glimpse inside the bar and the atmosphere that once made it so memorable. The footage comes from I Married a Munchkin, a film by Chicago filmmaker Tom Palazzolo. His work documented everyday life and some of the more unusual corners of the city, preserving scenes that might otherwise have disappeared from public memory. This particular footage gives viewers a chance to see the Midget Club as it actually looked while it was still operating. The tavern eventually closed after the city acquired the property and the building was cleared to make way for a public library. The decision became controversial among people who believed the establishment had a place in the neighbourhood and questioned whether another location could have been used for the library instead.
