This abandoned prison is part of a system that once held thousands. Today, the United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world, with approximately 2 million people in prisons and jails. The U.S. makes up about 5% of the world’s population but holds nearly 20% of its prisoners. The rise of mass incarceration began in the 1970s, and the federal prison population grew by over 700% between 1970 and 2009.
Private prisons began expanding in the 1980s and now house around 8% of state and federal prisoners. Nearly 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. has a criminal record. These facilities, even when abandoned, represent a significant part of the country’s criminal justice history 🥷 🚔
