Flemington Estate: Renewal or Erasure?
The Victorian Government plans to demolish the Flemington public housing towers, justifying the decision with three main reasons:
Ageing infrastructure :the buildings are old and need major repairs.
Budget constraints :the government claims it cannot afford to maintain them.
Increased housing supply :they propose higher-density, mixed-income developments instead.
But demolition isn’t the only answer.
This plan risks displacing residents, breaking up communities, and reducing secure public housing. Current tenants are already protesting, demanding the right to stay and be heard.
Our proposal offers a repair-based alternative one that modernizes buildings, improves energy efficiency, and creates better shared spaces, without erasing people’s homes or identities. Inspired by successful international models (like Toronto and Bordeaux), we aim to solve the same problems without demolition.
We believe that real progress preserves people, not just property.
