Mile 15 is one of the most dreaded miles of the New York City Marathon. All the noise and electric energy from the sidelines that make the marathon such a singular event vanish as runners climb the Queensboro Bridge. They are left with just the sound of collective panting and of hundreds of sneakers shuffling against asphalt. “Everyone is fighting their own demons as they are going up the bridge,” one runner told our reporter.
