A month ago Elissa Slotkin stood on a stage and bragged about her education. She had gone to Poland and Hungary, she said, and studied the forces that beat Viktor Orban, and she brought the lessons home. There is a playbook for these authoritarians, she said, and there is a playbook for getting out of it. She said it like the notes were a weapon. She said it weeks before the police surrounded a constitutional court in Warsaw. Then came Friday night. Riot police cordoned off the Constitutional Tribunal, the court that had stood in the prime minister’s way, and a judge the president never swore in suspended the court’s president and vice president. The court itself called it an illegal takeover and a coup d’état. The prime minister took credit for restoring the rule of law. The president flew home from Africa, walked through the crowds, climbed the barriers, and entered his own court. It reads like Slotkin’s playbook, in real time: the broad coalition, the corruption charge, the court neutralized, all of it dressed as saving democracy. The lessons she brought home from Poland arrived in Poland first. Nobody says she ordered the police to the court. Nobody has to. The question is whose side the playbook serves, and the answer was on the stage a month ago: the side that seizes the court and calls it law, the side that suspends the judges and calls it order, the side that treats a constitutional tribunal as an obstacle to be removed rather than a limit to be obeyed. Slotkin brought home lessons from Poland. Donald Tusk just demonstrated the lesson back, and the lesson is that the authoritarian playbook has two covers. One of them is hers. Michigan should read both before Tuesday.
The 2026 election cycle could see the end of AIPAC's public image as one of the most powerful outside groups in U.S. politics. ㅤ After spending millions in an effort to oppose candidates critical of Israel, the pro-Israel political organization sent out an internal letter obtained by us, announcing that AIPAC would no longer endorse candidates or make direct financial contributions to campaigns. ㅤ This is a massive departure from the group's high profile spending and endorsement campaigns in 2024. ㅤ Read more from our election coverage at the link in our bio.
