What would happen if icons of devotion and chastity adopted our same consumer habits? This project aims to decontextualize “sanctified” figures (such as the Virgin Mary, Buddha, Saint John the Baptist, and Moses), and portray them through the lens of a generation shaped by materialism, overconsumption, and vanity. Inspired by Catholic iconography, kitsch aesthetics, and the visual worlds of David LaChapelle, Pierre et Gilles, Miles Aldridge, and Steven Arnold, we use techniques such as digital collage, juxtaposition, and oversaturation to create thought-provoking images. All styling was done using second hand clothing, pieces from vintage markets, items from our own closets, and everyday objects within our reach. We deliberately chose digital collage as the foundation for this photo series to show that fashion campaigns can be created with zero consumption, while still achieving powerful, visually striking results, without resorting to empty or performative environmental messaging. Our intention is not to offend, but to raise awareness of the contradiction between our consumer behaviors and the spiritual ideals we claim to admire.
