What does leadership really mean? During Gender Equality Week at the European Parliament in Brussels, I joined the Women’s Leadership panel, hosted by European Parliament Vice-President Antonella Sberna @antonella_sberna alongside inspiring women from different fields. I shared part of my personal journey and reflected on a message I deeply believe in — one that matters not only for the generations of today, but also for those to come.
It’s official, and it’s heartbreaking. Out of the 50 most polluted cities in the entire world, a staggering 48 are right here in India. But we need to understand something: we cannot keep blaming the government for everything while refusing to acknowledge our own responsibility. Yes, the government must be held accountable for poor policies, weak enforcement and the lack of long-term solutions. But pollution is not just a government problem; it is a collective failure. Every year, as winter approaches, North India witnesses a sudden rise in stubble-burning incidents. Farmers continue burning crop residue, vehicles keep adding toxic emissions, construction dust goes unchecked, industries contribute to the problem, and we often treat environmental rules as optional. We complain when the AQI reaches dangerous levels, share pictures of smog on social media, and blame those in power. But what happens once the air clears? We go back to our normal lives until the next winter arrives. The harsh reality is that pollution does not care about our political preferences, religion, income or social status. It affects everyone. Children are growing up breathing toxic air, elderly people are struggling to breathe, and millions are being exposed to a health crisis they cannot simply escape. This is not about defending or attacking any political party. It is about acknowledging a national failure that demands accountability from both the authorities and citizens. We need stricter enforcement, better alternatives to stubble burning, cleaner transportation, responsible industries and, most importantly, a change in public behaviour.
