the articulated crayfish necklace 🏞️

last week i worked away at this new kinetic crayfish necklace, which required my patience & trust in the fabrication process. carefully, i crafted 20 cold connections as well as a fluttering, forged, multi-pieced tail. this crayfish’s legs, arms, claws, antennae & tail fan all bend up, down, inwards or outwards.

the northern clearwater crayfish thrives in cold & clean mountain streams, where they hide between rocks & feed off algae & insect larvae (the kind that trout love!). most clearwater crayfish appear brown or tan, but some can appear blue from a genetic mutation!

if you’ve ever seen a crayfish swim, you’ve probably been surprised by the motion. crayfish propel themselves backwards by flexing their tail muscles! this movement happens in a flash, as they are quick to escape & hide from predators, like herons, otters & snapping turtles.

i’m so pleased with the outcome of my kinetic crayfish & i plan to list it in my riverbanks collection. i’m still deciding when that release will be, so stay tuned!
