One of the biggest myths in credit is this:
“If a debt was sold to a debt collector, you don’t have to pay it because you never did business with them.”
This is FALSE.
When a debt collector legally purchases your debt and is licensed to collect in your state, that debt is still considered valid.
But here’s the key:
➡️ That does not automatically mean you have to pay it.
➡️ You have the legal right under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) to challenge and dispute debts.
Even if a debt is valid, it can often be removed when:
• The collector fails to properly validate the debt.
• There are reporting errors or inconsistencies across the 3 credit bureaus.
• Information reported is inaccurate, incomplete, or outdated.
Creditors and collectors are required to follow the law. If they don’t, you can leverage those violations to protect your credit profile.
✨ The bottom line: You are not powerless. Knowledge of your rights can help you successfully challenge and remove debts — even ones you technically owe.
