Good list, and that opening shot is Kourtaliotiko itself. Locals say the gorge got its name from the kourtala, the clapping sound the wind makes rushing through it. Go early before the day tours reach the water.

Beautiful city, but a very disappointing experience with the local municipality. We parked at Πλατεία Μαρκοπούλου, the physical parking meter was completely broken. As honest tourists, we tried to pay multiple times without success, only to find a €30 fine. We paid it immediately to avoid issues with our rental company. When we filed a claim, their standardized reply was simply to shift the blame, saying we should have downloaded a local app or searched the area for a partner kiosk! Expecting foreign visitors to wander around looking for alternative payment methods when the municipality's own machine is broken is totally impractical. Now, our follow-up emails are being ignored. Penalizing visitors for a failure of municipal equipment leaves a very poor impression of Chania's welcoming spirit. ❌🚗
