Deb Haaland made history in 2024 when she became the first Native American woman elected governor of a U.S. state, winning New Mexico’s gubernatorial election and breaking a barrier in American politics. A member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe, Haaland has spent much of her career advocating for Indigenous communities, environmental protection and greater representation in government. Before her historic campaign for governor, Haaland had already achieved several political milestones. In 2018, she became one of the first two Native American women elected to the U.S. Congress, alongside Sharice Davids. She later served as Secretary of the Interior under President Joe Biden, becoming the first Native American to hold a Cabinet secretary position. Her journey from a single mother who once relied on food assistance to one of the most prominent Indigenous political figures in American history has inspired people across the country. Her achievements represent significant progress for Native American representation in leadership and government. 🇺🇸🪶
