Research on gut microbiome-based interventions in children and teens found that prebiotics were linked to small reductions in BMI and body weight, while short-chain fatty acids showed decreases in BMI and waist circumference. Probiotics and fecal microbiota transplantation, however, had little to no effect on obesity outcomes.
My perspective? Short-term interventions that don’t address the whole diet or lifestyle are unlikely to create meaningful change in pediatric obesity.
