A lot of my Jewish Democrat friends woke up this morning with great joy, and also with real fear. Joy because the party took back the House and the Senate. Fear because some of the people who won last night have apologized or excused antisemitism before, and some have repeated the kind of anti-Israel rhetoric that has made American Jews less safe in their own cities.

I want to offer a different way to look at it.

The Democratic Party is a lot bigger than a handful of candidates. Every Jewish Democrat in this carousel won. Elaine Luria flipped a seat back. Josh Gottheimer, Brad Schneider, Jared Moskowitz and Greg Landsman are all going back to Washington. Amy Acton is the first woman and the first Jew ever elected governor of Ohio. Adrian Boafo, a Black Democrat from Bowie, Maryland, ran on standing with his Jewish neighbors and won by nearly 40 points. Hakeem Jeffries, the man on track to be elected Speaker, opposed cutting military aid to Israel when nearly half his caucus wanted to. Ritchie Torres called himself a Zionist and got re-elected again.

Don’t let a few anti-Israel wins in deep-blue districts obscure this. Most Democrats still care about Jews and about the Jewish state, and we have a far better chance of keeping their support by working with reasonable leaders than by writing off a whole party because of its loudest members. Throwing up our hands and giving in is not an option.

Meanwhile VP JD Vance blamed Israel for the GDP losing the elections…as expected.

Now that election season is over, lawmakers in both parties need to lower the temperature on Israel. Somehow the Jewish state’s existence became a main talking point to get elected. That is no way to govern. The people in this carousel give me hope. Support them. 🇺🇸
