Some seasons feel engineered to harden you: clipped voices, stone faces, rooms that never warm. I’ve lived there. I still do. And yet something in me insists on staying soft. It feels like rebellion to want kindness here.
Dostoevsky called it out. We are not piano keys. Even if science “proved” we were, he said, the human spirit would act against the script, just to prove it’s free. And when it comes to love, he didn’t romanticize it. “Love in action,” he wrote, “is a harsh and dreadful thing.” It asks for patience when no one’s watching. Forgiveness with no applause. Warmth in a cold room.
So today, I’m choosing warmth, not because my world makes it easy, but because my soul refuses to be programmed by it.
Not a product. A person. Not a piano key. A will.
If you’re in a hard place: let your softness be your strike.
Kindness is resistance.
