Over the last week
@i.m.kcb have been cycling along the southern coast of Sicilia. On the way the hills have been studded with fascist bunkers. These concrete structures housed soldiers, machine guns and cannons to defend against allied forces during WWII. Not long ago, in July 1943 Americans landed on the coast of Gela, a town we just spent 2 nights in. This began operation Husky. This mission would lead to the liberation of the island of Sicily from the fascist regime. As we cycle the path towards these bunkers I feel proud that my country and my family members sacrificed their lives in order to protect the world’s societies from fascism. As I check in on current events back home it is hard for me to realize how we have gotten to the point of supporting fascism in America. Have we been too sheltered to not see the realities of WWII and what it was all for?
