Seiko 5216-7070 LM Special from 1971
Seiko began introducing the LM Special Series in 1968 as the successor to the Lord Marvel series. They were occasionally equipped with unique faceted crystals, angular case shapes and more importantly incredibly complex, eye catching beautiful dials.
It's a no brainer why collectors value King Seiko's and Grand Seiko's. They're some of the best vintage watches ever made that can hold up to even today's modern watches. However, LM Specials I feel deserve more recognition and appreciation. These laid the ground work for King Seiko & Grand Seiko, with the 5600 High-Beat movements, high quality/complex finishing, geometric case designs and the absolutely insane dials. The Lord Matic series seemed to be Seiko's way of experimenting what they were capable, testing their limits of engineering and craftsmanship.
This 5216-7070 is my personal favorite out of the LM Special series. The checkered dial, with radial texturing, fumé coloring, causing an iridescent effect at certain angles and completely shifting in color is something I don't even see being done in modern Grand Seiko's. Not only that but the indices and hands have so much complexity in texture, angles and finishing. I wish I could've properly capture the facetted crystal because it's so beautifully done.
All of this done on a watch that's about 37mm and 50 years ago. This is why Seiko is my favorite watch brand and why I regard them so highly.
