Paying for dinner in America comes with a few extra steps that Europeans just don’t understand. In the European Union, menu prices have to include tax, so the number you see is the number you pay, while in the US, sales tax varies by state and city and usually gets added at the end. Tipping is the other big difference. The federal minimum wage for tipped workers in the US is still just $2.13 an hour, unchanged since 1991, so in many states servers rely on tips for most of their income. In much of Europe, servers earn a regular wage, and in countries like France, a service charge is already built into the menu price by law. Even the way you pay is different, since European restaurants usually bring a card reader right to the table, while many American spots still take your card away and come back with a receipt to sign. That’s slowly changing as more US restaurants switch to tableside payment, though the tip screen isn’t going anywhere. #restaurant #eatingout #bill #america #europe

‘I voted’ stickers were seen on memorials for Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minnesota on midterm election day. Pretti, an intensive-care-unit nurse, was killed while participating in protests against the federal immigration enforcement surge in Minneapolis, shortly after ICE agents fatally shot another US citizen, Renee Good. 🔗 Full coverage at our link in bio
