My parent’s house - my childhood home - went on the market today.
It’s hard to put into words just how many emotions come with a change (and a loss) of this size. In 1984, my parents purchased a plot of land in a quiet, undeveloped area, where they built their forever home. Over the last 40 years, it became the heart of countless memories: unforgettable Christmas mornings, summer pool parties, board game nights filled with laughter over Candyland, Yahtzee, and Monopoly, 80s movie marathons, and family gatherings overflowing with food and everyone we love.
On fall days like today, I can almost see my Dad bringing in firewood, our loyal Black Lab trailing behind. I can smell the delicious snacks my Mom would be making in the kitchen in preparation for a Giants game. Even the most ordinary days spent at this home, together, were special. I was lucky.
As if this house was a character in the Brave Little Toaster, I know it’s sad to see us go. But I also know we filled this space with so much love and happiness. And that’s all that really matters in life.
