The Frankfurt Kitchen, on display at V&A East Storehouse, is considered the world’s first modern, mass-produced fitted kitchen.
Designed in 1926 by Austrian architect Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, it transformed domestic life by treating the kitchen as a functional, efficient workspace based on time-and-motion studies.
What seems ordinary to us today, built-in cabinets, integrated storage, ergonomic layout, even the idea of a “work triangle”, all began here. A small space, but a huge moment in design history.
A reminder that good design doesn’t just shape our homes, it shapes how we live.
