To mark the 76th anniversary of the Iva Valley Coal Miners Massacre, the Enugu State Ministry of Culture & Tourism and the Enugu State Council for Arts & Culture, in collaboration with the Centre for Memories and other partner organisations, will host a memorial event tomorrow at the International Conference Centre, Enugu.
On 18 November 1949, colonial police opened fire on miners at the Iva Valley Coal Mine, killing 21 workers who were peacefully demanding improved welfare and working conditions. It remains the deadliest deployment of force by the colonial administration against organised labour in Nigeria.
Beyond that day’s casualties, additional deaths were recorded in the days that followed as injured miners succumbed to their wounds.
Seventy-six years later, we are reviving the call for justice, remembrance, and sustained accountability for the victims and for the families still haunted by this tragedy.
Details of the event are as follows:
Date: 18 November 2025
Time: 12:00 Noon
Venue: International Conference Centre, Enugu
We invite you to join us as we honour the miners, and deepen public understanding of this defining moment in our shared history.
