When I ask the great Catherine Opie what makes her cry, she tells me: bad commercials.
I love the specificity of that. The honesty. I've been reading Chaucer's Wife of Bath with @bookcradle, and something in this reminds me of Chauser's Alisoun—that willingness to tell the truth.
There's something quietly radical about a brand allowing this to exist. A film that questions the very nature of commercials. Creating space for a different kind of truth-telling.
Chaucer's Alisoun knew this 600 years ago. She went into great detail, turned her truth into an argument, reimagined what was possible. She said: who tells the story changes everything. If the lion had painted the picture, we'd see something completely different.
Both women seizing control of the narrative. Catherine through her truth, Alisoun through her prologue. Me through this film. All of us painting our own pictures.
