I remember being around six, ish, and so afraid of the dark, and deciding one day to put myself on the floor of my room, lights off, crying, and thinking - I am going to stop being scared of this. I am going to get over this. And I sat there, and I cried, freaked out, then realized I could handle the discomfort of the unknown.
Which brings me to how I’ve spent the last few years - I have been going completely, totally mad in this weird, dark, dystopian hellscape for some time now. Because no, I don't want to do work that's extractive, and no, I don't just want keep myself busy and entertained until I die. I don't want to pretend like much of my comfort isn't built on the exploitation of the vulnerable, and I don't want to lose awareness of that reality at any point. Not to say that there's no room for joy. But for what ends is my joy? Me? Is that really enough?
I'm an artist, and a young woman, and so I'm especially allowed, but I do believe that each and every one of us should practice going a little more mad in response to the reality we've been presented with. As frightening as it may be to ask, can you stand the way you're living? Can you die the way you're living?
What do you believe in, and how are you learning to bridge the gap between that and your immediate reality? How absurd are you willing to look in the name of the Gods you claim to worship? The reality you believe is for the best of all involved? What is one thing you can do, today, to be closer to the kind of integrity you believe in?
Going mad has not been a particularly easy experience, but if you saw the face of God, would you not be willing to lay down the safe life you've known to belong to something more meaningful?
Would you dare to face life, with total honesty, forever? Would you dare to upset the dysfunctional if the result is Love?
Are you willing to admit when what you're doing is an old means of survival that needs to be retired now? What vehicle gets us all closer to the Love, today, and will you get in, and will you keep getting in, forever, even if the form changes?
