Misinformation thrives in the digital age, but there are steps that we can take as individuals to verify and learn from the information we see.
As Vets and Nurses, it is our job to stay up to date on the latest research for the species that we treat. As well as to pull from our experience treating these animals to inform our clinical advice. That’s why, in the first instance, we always recommend exotic animal owners work closely with an Exotics Vet to answer any husbandry questions and to help guide them on their journey with their pet. We also recognise the value of online communities as a way to support owners, share knowledge and learn from experience. So if you are looking for online information, we advise that it’s from reputable, fact-based and judgement free groups.
Some good examples of these are the Advancing Herpetological Husbandry FaceBook Group, the British Chelonia Group, the Tortoise Club and Reptifiles.
