#notafoodpost - random stuff I notice and love to talk about. Every morning when I sit for my pranayama, I notice hundreds of kites circling the sky. It is one of those quietly perfect pieces of everyday ecology- they are not actively hunting, they’re working the air. In the early morning, especially when it’s cool, the ground begins to warm unevenly, creating thermals, the slow, rising columns of warm air. Once the kites lock into a thermal, they can stay aloft for hours with almost no wing-flapping, just riding that invisible elevator upward, then gliding out and circling again to catch the next lift. So the circling is economical, patient, almost meditative. They’re near the canal where the water edges are prime real estate. Fish near the surface, small mammals, reptiles warming themselves, carrion, even insects stirred up by morning activity- all of it becomes visible from above. Kites are gregarious raptors. When conditions are right-good thermals, calm air, morning light- they gather. One bird finds a thermal, others notice, and suddenly the sky fills. It looks dramatic, but it’s actually a sign that the system is healthy and predictable. Midday heat makes air turbulent and less efficient to ride. Morning air is smoother, thermals are gentler and more reliable, and prey is more exposed as it warms itself. By late morning or afternoon, many of them drift off, already fed or simply done flying for the day. They’re not really urgently searching. They’re surveying, conserving energy, and waiting, letting gravity and heat do the work. Because thermals are free lift, a kite staying in a thermal can gain height without spending energy letting them stay airborne for hours. That means more time aloft with less food required. Also the higher they are, the more ground they can see. From a few hundred feet up, a canal, road edge, or clearing becomes a moving map of potential food. Kites don’t hunt like falcons. They wait, watch, and drift. Contd.

Thermals let them linger until something worth dropping for appears. Staying high reduces risk from ground threats and avoids unnecessary exertion. It is the most efficient way to exist in the sky: maximum vision, minimum effort, zero hurry. What looks like circling is really just staying suspended, and as long as the air keeps rising, there’s no reason to leave. If you watch closely, you will notice how calm they are up there. It’s a soft, swaying musical rhythm. No rush. Just wide circles, again and again, as long as the air allows it. It is one of those scenes that looks restless but is actually deeply efficient, and oddly serene #sarchakra #onlyinflorida . . . . #kitesofinstagram #birdsofprey #soaringbirds #raptors #skywatching #urbanwildlife #wildlifeeverywhere #morninglight #coolmornings #canallife #floridanature #skyscenes #everydaysky #slowmoments #observingnature #quietwonders #naturetherapy #simplepleasures #kitesofinstagram #birdsofprey #soaringbirds #morninglight #urbanwildlife #skywatching #floridanature #quietwonders
