Canva is laying off 22% of its workforce, affecting up to 1,271 employees. But the way the company is handling these layoffs is getting a lot of attention. It marks the first major round of layoffs in Canva's 13-year history. The company remains profitable, but its growth has slowed as AI continues to change the economics of the design industry. CEO and co-founder Melanie Perkins described it as one of the hardest moments in Canva's history. What makes this announcement stand out is the support Canva is offering departing employees: โ†’ At least 6 months of salary, regardless of location. โ†’ Up to 12 months of healthcare coverage where available. โ†’ Removal of the one-year equity vesting requirement for recent hires. โ†’ Career coaching, job search support and a year of LinkedIn Premium. โ†’ Employees can keep their company-issued MacBooks. โ†’ The chance to receive a $10,000 grant to start a business or community project, with Canva taking no equity. Losing a job is still a difficult experience, regardless of the compensation. But the effort Canva is making to help affected employees find their next opportunity deserves recognition. And it raises an important question for other tech leaders: if layoffs become more common as AI changes the workforce, should this level of support become the standard?

Aber Kawas just became the first Palestinian American elected to the New York State Senate. She won big. This is the same woman shown in 2016 footage at an Al-Quds Day rally holding up a green Hamas headband. Al-Quds Day is an annual event started by the Islamic Republic of Iran focused on opposing Israel, and the New York rally included chants of โ€œAmerica is not our friend.โ€ The same woman who said 9/11 was one piece of a long history of American capitalism, racism, white supremacy, and Islamophobia, and that Muslims shouldnโ€™t have to apologize for it. The same woman who helped launch campaigns to cut New York money tied to Israel and posted โ€œWe made historyโ€ with a Palestinian flag after winning. She still got elected. Overwhelmingly. This is what the 2026 midterms delivered. Candidates with open anti-Israel records and footage involving Hamas symbolism walked into office while voters looked the other way. America is in trouble when this becomes normal. When symbols tied to a designated terrorist group and statements that downplay the worst attack on U.S. soil donโ€™t disqualify anyone. When the people cheering โ€œhistoryโ€ are the ones who spent years opposing the one democracy in the Middle East. Wake up. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ
