10 months ago1️⃣ Context: Who is speaking? Psalm 46 is written to people facing chaos, war, fear, and instability. The psalm describes earthquakes, collapsing mountains, raging nations, and battle threats. In the middle of this, God Himself speaks in verse 10. This is not primarily a quiet devotional whisper. It is God’s authoritative declaration in crisis. ⸻ 2️⃣ “Be still” — What does that actually mean? The Hebrew phrase “ḥarpu” literally means: • stop striving • cease fighting • drop your weapons • loosen your grip It is not first about peaceful meditation. It is a command to stop panic-driven attempts to control outcomes. Theologically: God confronts human self-reliance and anxiety-driven activism. He commands trust, surrender, and submission to His sovereignty. ⸻ 3️⃣ “Know that I am God” — What kind of “knowing”? “Know” (Hebrew yada) is not intellectual awareness. It is experiential recognition — deeply acknowledging God’s identity and authority. It means: • Recognize Who is truly in control • Trust His authority above circumstances • Acknowledge His sovereignty over nations, enemies, chaos, and fear This is covenant language. God is reminding His people of His identity as the faithful, present, covenant God. ⸻ 4️⃣ The Theology of God Presented Here Psalm 46:10 reveals key theological truths: ✅ God is Sovereign He rules over: • nature (“earth melts” at His voice) • nations (“He makes wars cease”) • history (“I will be exalted among the nations”) This is a corrective to human pride and fear. ⸻ ✅ God is Present Earlier the psalm declares: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (v.1) This is Immanuel theology: God with us. He is not distant. He is actively involved. ⸻ ✅ God is Worthy of Worship When God says, “I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth” He declares His universal kingship. This is missionary theology and eschatological hope: God’s glory will ultimately prevail in all the earth. 10 months agoThe advent challenge in the Hallow App of being still is still resonating with me! Where this year I want to be intentional, present, have clarity and love. Slowing down will help get me there!
