1. Because love often hides control.

You’re convinced you know what’s best. So you keep advising, interfering, worrying - even when no one asks.
Your “care” sends a silent message: “I don’t believe you can handle life on your own.”
You take away their right to make mistakes - and with it, their right to gain real life experience.
Your love becomes a cage: comfortable, but impossible to grow in.

2. Your love can turn into a debt that can never be repaid.

You sacrificed. You invested. You postponed your own life.
And now - consciously or not - you expect a return on that investment: attention, loyalty, choices that suit you.
The child feels this unspoken debt.
They either rebel with guilt, or break themselves trying to pay it back.
Both are poison to their sense of self.

3. You use love as a vehicle for your unfulfilled ambitions.

You want them to achieve what you couldn’t.
Choose the career you consider prestigious.
Build a life according to your blueprint.
You call it concern for their happiness.
In reality, it’s living your life through them.
They become a project, not a person.
And your love becomes conditional on the success of that project.

4. The danger is that you become their primary emotional burden.

They can’t move far away - because you’ll suffer.
They can’t choose a risky path - because you won’t survive it.
Your fears, anxieties, and unresolved pain become their limitations.
They live a life designed to hurt you as little as possible - not a life that is truly theirs.
Your love suffocates their freedom, and you call it closeness.

5. Healthy love after 18 is not fusion - it is respect for a separate person.

It’s the ability to step back and watch them build their own path, even when it looks strange to you.
It’s doing the work on your own life, so you have meaning beyond their presence.
Become a safe harbor they can return to if they choose.
Not one they are obligated to stay in.

The visual content in this reel makes me uncomfortable. Mothers shudnt treat adult children like kids. It’s the mother’s need for control and stunting the emotional growth of the kids.

So much bs in western cultures omg! The analysis never ends. Love your daughters with all your heart. You are a gift to them and they are a gift to you. Advice, guide, mentor as you see fit based on your longer years of experience and wisdom. They may or may not take it. That choice is theirs. Love them regardless and share your insights with them as you probably gained some through your life. Rest of the world with ancient cultures have been doing it forever. It’s not control. It’s just being parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles lol 🤷🏽‍♀️

Some for this is true, but the age 18 is a fabricated age from patriarchal colonialism that has tried to create individual tax payers and nuclear families with an attempt to replace a tribe or clan, and it never will. We need belonging and loneliness and depression will continue to rise until we figure out how to have a collective society with respect to the individual.
